A Complete Guide Visa for New Zealand

Passport Requirements:

All travelers are supposed to have a passport, except for the following:

1. Tourists with a travel authorization provided by Macao.

2. Travelers with Travel Papers issued by the International Committee of the Red Cross.

3. Refugees and individuals without nationality or nationality with identification cards provided that international representatives approve those documents of New Zealand at the time of a visa issue.

4. A German identification card is given to children by the tourist with Kinderausweis.

5. Travelers with a Seaman Book.

6. Travelers with Temporary Travel Papers issued by ‘Timor Leste.’

7. Travelers with a Certificate of identity issued by the New Zealand Government for Travelers who cannot get a national passport.

8. Travelers with a ‘Laissez-Passer’ that is issued by the United Nations.

Document Validity:

Passports and alternate certificates, or any of them, must be available for three months after the scheduled visit.

  1. Passports and alternative papers have to be valid for at least one month after the period of intended visit for citizens of the following countries: Austria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Kiribati, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Mongolia, Morocco, Nauru, Nepal, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Norway, Man, Pakistan, Panama, Papa New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Samoa, Serbia, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Trinidad & Tobago, Turkey, Tuvalu, Ukraine, Uruguay, Vanuatu, Vatican City, United Kingdom, Vietnam, United States of America, Vietnam.
  2. Passports and alternative papers must be valid for at least one month after the period of the intended visit for citizens of the mainland People’s Republic of China according to diplomatic representation in New Zealand.
  3. Citizens of Australia and New Zealand can enter with passports and substitute documents that are valid on arrival or with any of them.
  4. Passports that contain an Australian resident return visa, a New Zealand returning resident visa, or a visa of residence in New Zealand must be valid on arrival.

Additional information:

1. Travelers with travel documents issued by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are not acceptable.

2. Travelers with Chinese Taipei official and diplomatic passports are not acceptable. Even so, it would be appropriate for travelers with regular Chinese Taipei passports, which numbers are formatted with M.F.A. X, or M.

3. Travelers with ordinary passports issued by Belarus, which do not bear multiple exit stamps are not acceptable.

4. Investor passports issued by Nauru and Kiribati, which do not confirm the traveler’s nationality, are not acceptable.

5. Travelers with travel documents that are issued by Somalia are not acceptable.

6. Travelers with collective passports issued by Slovenia, the Republic of Serbia, and the Republic of Montenegro are not acceptable.

7. Travelers with protected person passports issued by Tonga are not acceptable.

8. Travelers with Article 17 passports issued by Kuwait are not acceptable.

9. Travelers with passports of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan are not acceptable.

10. Travelers with travel documents issued by the Maori Kingdom of Teteti Islands and the World Service Authority cannot transit or enter New Zealand because of an unofficial authority issue.


Children entering New Zealand may be included in the parent’s passport provided they are in their company while traveling.

Visa Issuance:

Before arrival: Travelers are kindly requested to contact the nearest representation of New Zealand.

Visa Exemptions:

All Travelers must hold a visa except the following:

1. Citizens of New Zealand.

2. Australian citizens.

3. Travelers with British passports on condition that they have:

   a.  Proof of alternative document required to establish the right of residence in the United Kingdom such as permanent residence papers, a certificate or letter from the British authorities, or a Birth Certificate which confirms that the United Kingdom is the place of birth, in addition to their passport; stay is permitted up to no more than six months;

   b. Passports endorsed ‘British Citizen’; stay is permitted up to no more than six months;

   c. Passports endorsed ‘British National (Overseas)’; stay is permitted up to no more than three months;

   d. Passports which confirms the right of residence in the United Kingdom; stay is permitted up to no more than six months;

4. Travelers staying for no more than three months provided they are:

a. Citizens of Portugal if the traveler has the right to enter Portugal for residing permanently;

b. Citizens of Austria, Argentina, Andorra, Brazil, Belgium, Bahrain, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Germany, Japan, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Poland, Qatar, Romania, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, Vatican City, United Kingdom

 c. Travelers with Passports issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China).

5. Travelers with a ‘Laissez-Passer’ which is issued by the United Nations.

6. Travelers with travel certificates provided by the Red Cross Foreign Commission.

7. Certificated government officials and their families or relatives with passports accepted ‘Permit Waiver’ issued by consular or diplomatic offices abroad under the terms of the Diplomatic Privileges and Immunities Act of 1968 or even the Consular Privileges and Immunities Act of 1971.

8. Passengers with valid New Zealand-issued re-entry permits.

9. Travelers with a valid Resident Return Visa or a Re-entry permit issued by Australia permitting unlimited residence in Australia for an indefinite period.

10.Travelers with a Business Travel Card issued by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. The reverse of the card must announce is eligible for New Zealand travel.

TWOV (Transit without Visa):

1. TWOV is required to fly to Australia within 24 hours as the first or final destination after New Zealand and possess a valid visa for Australia. However, bus passengers are not permitted to exit the airport bus lounge. Besides, Travelers must have all the required documentation for their onward journey and tickets with reserved seats.

2. TWOV shall not refer to migrants and individuals of citizenship or identity.

3. TWOV is allowed for passengers to begin their journey to a third country by linking or using the same aircraft within 24 hours without leaving the airport transfer field. Travelers must have all the required documentation for their onward journey and tickets with reserved seats; this can refer to the following:

a. ‘British Overseas Territories’ licensed travelers with British passports;

b. People of Peru, Colombia, Kiribati, Micronesia, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Palau Islands, Papua New Guinea, Bahamas, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Samoa.

4. There must be valid visas for French citizens transiting from New Zealand to French Polynesia or New Caledonia.

Additional information:

1. On arrival, it is necessary for Travelers to have the financial means to support themselves during their stay in New Zealand; proof of such means will be needed. The sum of money needed is NZD 1,000 for each guest per month or NZD 400 if the accommodation has been paid in advance. The traveler’s proof of cash would be in the form of a letter of credit, a bank statement, cash, traveler’s cheques, or any of the following credit cards: bank card, MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club, or American Express.

2. All travelers must have a permit to access Tokelau from the Tokelau Apia Liason office in Apia at least two weeks before the travel date, except for Tokelau residents. Since there are no airports in Tokelau, travel by boat from Samoa is required; thus, travelers must seek permission from the Samoan border officials to leave and re-enter Samoa.

3. All passengers must be able to deliver onward tickets to a country upon arrival. They can demonstrate that they have a right of entry with company reservations as long as they fly on special rate airfares until a particular permit has been issued. Airlines have to deport passengers with inappropriate documents; Exceptions:

a. Travelers with a Returning Resident Visa that must be valid, and Travelers with an Australian permanent residence, who may enter with one-way tickets;

   b. Citizens of Australia and New Zealand.

4. Travelers who want to visit New Zealand must have valid papers that allow them to re-enter into their home country or enter into the country they intend to proceed to.

Information to know:

If Travelers do not respect visa requirements, they will be deported to their home country at the transporting carrier’s expense. Besides, the transporting carrier may be prosecuted.


Import regulations

There are no restrictions on the import of the following:

1. Wearing clothing (such as fur apparel for overseas travelers); however, all clothing (other than fur apparel) for their use and fur apparel is allowed to be imported by citizens and international residents of New Zealand only if the customs are convinced that they are meant for personal use and have been maintained or used for 12 months.

2. Personal belongings: personal jewelry (including watches), clothing, and toiletries are allowed free of duty; however, if they are purchased for personal use, not for any other person(s) or sale, exchange or as a gift, a goods and service tax is charged. This often contains used or new things that travelers will use before the trip for their personal use or that have been collected by returning New Zealand citizens during a trip abroad.

3. It is allowed for Travelers aged 18 years old or more to import the following tobacco products: 50 cigarettes or 50 grams of cigars or 50 grams of nicotine or a combination, weighing max. 50 grams.

4. Travelers aged 18 years old or more are allowed to import the following alcoholic drinks:

a. 4.5 liters of beer or 4.5 liters of wine; and

b. three bottles (or other containers), each of which contains no more than 1125 milliliters of liquor, spirits, or other alcoholic drinks.

c.  Additionally, tourists may also import the following on condition that the goods are taken on departure from New Zealand:

d. Flashlights; baby carriages and scooters; calculators; mobile or cell phones; mobile entertainment tools; mobile radio receivers; personal accessories and laptops; athletic equipment; portable typewriter; mobile radio and recording equipment; still, recording and motion picture cameras and accessories; wheelchairs for disabled people.

5. All dutiable goods on condition that the goods accompany the traveler and are not imported for business or sale purposes or imported for another person except as gifts:

  does not apply to the following: It does not extend to the following: cigarettes and liquor, food, personal and household belongings up to the value of NZD 700. This cap of NZD 700 applies to the overall aggregate amount of all products purchased under these conditions. Individuals moving together cannot merge their allowances. Complete obligation and sales tax shall refer to sums exceeding the cumulative value of NZD 700.

6. Household and other property only if it is owned and used by Travelers before departure for New Zealand and given that the traveler has been a resident outside New Zealand for 21 months before his / her arrival in New Zealand and that the traveler wishes to stay living in New Zealand.

Export regulations

Greenstone Maori antiquities, Paua shells, except for objects made up from such shells, are banned.

Crew Members customs regulations:

If the crew members arrive as:

1. Operating crew: the same rules apply to crew members as everyday Travelers, except that the maximum customs duty allowed is NZD.50.

2. Travelers: the same rules apply as far as passports are concerned.


Cats and dogs:

1. Cats and dogs may be imported from Argentina, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Chile, Chinese Taipei, Cyprus, Canada, Denmark, Falkland Islands, Finland, France, Greenland, Germany, Guam, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Malta, Peninsular Malaysia (excluding the rabies control area), Mauritius, Netherlands, Macao, Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, Portugal, Reunion, Sabah, Sarawak, Seychelles, Spain, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad & Tobago, Wallis, Switzerland, the UAE, the USA (excluding Hawaii), Uruguay and Futuna, except if:

a. they are accompanied by all required certificates and are sent as cargo in a carefully closed cabinet.

b. they must be at least nine months old at departure.

c. they have been residing in one of the countries mentioned above for at least six months before exportation, and the pet must not have been residing in official quarantine premises in the 60 days before their departure.

d. they are not over 42 days pregnant at the shipment date.


Information message the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture for more detail on special rules relating to pet animals transported directly from New Zealand into the exporting country and then again within six months and eventually back to New Zealand.

2. Pets can only be transported directly from the Hawaiian Islands, Norway, the Republic of Ireland, Australia, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Singapore if they are delivered as cargo in containers that are carefully packed and accompanied by the certificates demanded.


Australian guide dogs can only fly with a passenger in the cabin of an aircraft, subject to the carrier’s approval, provided that the passenger needs to alert the carrier before arrival and that the certificates of the dog are included in the flight bag of the aircraft.

3. If they arrive from one of the direct import sites, companion animals shipped from other nations will be permitted to enter. Compliance with the import laws of the other nation and the quarantine duration is needed. They count as a direct import following the requisite stay. In both cases, pets require a pre-arrival certificate provided by the Ministry of Agriculture in New Zealand.


  • No imports into New Zealand are approved for the American Pit Bull Terrier, Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentina, Japanese Tosa, and Perro de Presa Canaria.

Baggage Clearance regulations:

A traveler’s luggage should be cleared at the first airport of entry in New Zealand.

a. Exemptions:

Luggage of Travelers in the transit area with a destination outside New Zealand only if the onward flight is on the same day without leaving the transit area.

Airport tax:

All Travelers are not required to pay any airport tax upon departing from the Auckland International Airport. However, an International Traveler Charge is imposed on Travelers departing for destinations out of New Zealand as follows:

1. A NZD-25 fee is charged from Travelers departing from Hamilton Airport.


  • Children aged 11 years old or younger.
  • Travelers were transiting with the same plane.

 2. A NZD-25 fee is charged from travelers departing from Palmerstone North Airport.


  • Travelers who are flying on the same aircraft.
  • Children aged 11 or younger.

3. Travelers leaving from Christchurch International Airport are paid a NZD-25 fee.


  • Transit travelers who stay up to 6 hours in the transit city.
  • Children aged 11 or younger.

4. Travelers departing from Dunedin Airport are paid a NZD-20 fee.


  • Travelers who are flying on the same aircraft.
  • Children aged 11 or younger.

5. The International Airport of Wellington:

Children aged between two and eleven years old are paid an NZD-10 fee. An NZD-25 fee is payable to travelers aged 12 years or older.


  • Children under the age of two years old.

6. Travelers departing from Queenstown Airport are paid an NZD-5 fee.


  • Travelers who are flying on the same aircraft.
  • Children aged 11 or younger.

Payment Place: Departure Airport.

Exemptions for all airports:

a. Dead Heading Crew on condition that they have a crew identity card and a letter affirming that they are ‘deadheading’ issued by their company.

b. Diplomatists with a certificate of exemption issued by New Zealand Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

c. Crew members departed as operating crew only if the crew form’s declaration has been filled in.

Currency Import regulations

Local currency (NZD-New Zealand Dollar) and foreign currency in quantities beyond NZD- 10,000 should be confirmed.

Currency Export regulations

Local currency (NZD-New Zealand Dollar) and foreign currency in quantities beyond NZD-10,000 should be confirmed.

Arms and Ammunition regulations

Concealable guns such as revolvers and assault handguns shall be banned. The permit for all other weapons/air guns must be applied electronically before departure, and the permit will be given upon arrival by the N.Z. Police, by viewing the passport and the weapons license issued by the country of residency. A processing fee of NZD.$25 will also be received upon delivery.
