IMMIGRATION AND VISAS
Egypt visa policy Passport Requirements:
All travelers need a passport, except the following:
- Travelers with a temporary or permanent National ID Card issued to Citizens of Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, or Portugal.
- Travelers with Kinderausweis, a German identity document issued to children.
- Travelers with the United States ‘Permit to Re-Enter’ provided they were born in Egypt.
- Travelers with a Seaman Book issued by any country except for Chinese Taipei, India, or Pakistan provided they are traveling on duty.
- Laissez-Passer travelers issued by the United Nations.
- Travelers with a Laissez-Passer issued to refugees and people without nationality or citizenship.
- Travelers with a Laissez-Passer issued to Palestinians by Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, or the Yemen Republic.
- Travelers with travel documents issued by the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo to Kosovo’s permanent inhabitants.
Document Validity
Passports and alternative papers, or either of them, must be valid for at least two months after the period of the intended visit.
- Citizens of Egypt may enter with passports valid on arrival.
- Residents of Egypt may enter with travel documents valid on arrival.
Egypt visa policy for Visa Issuance:
1. Before arrival: Travelers are kindly requested to contact the nearest representation of Egypt.
2. On arrival: A visa may be issued, if necessary, to travelers staying for no more than 30 days provided they are citizens of Turkey, who are:
- younger than 20 or older than 45 years old; and
- examined by the security authorities on arrival.
It is, however, strongly recommended to obtain a visa before arrival.
3. On arrival: A tourist visa can be issued on arrival, if necessary, to citizens of all countries with normal passports provided they are staying for no more than 30 days, against a fee of USD 15 or its equivalent.
1. A photo is required for Citizens of Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, or Portugal with a National ID Card.
2. Such rules do not apply to citizens of Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Bosnia Herzegovina, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde Islands, the Republic of Central Africa, Chad, Comoro Islands, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa), Cote d’Ivoire

Mauritius, Republic of Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Zambia or Zimbabwe.
– Such rules do not apply to citizens of the People’s Republic of China.
3. On arrival: A visa may be issued on arrival, if necessary, to citizens of Sudan staying for no more than three months; (extension is possible) provided they are residing in a European Union or Gulf Cooperation Council member country, Australia, Canada, or the United States, and holding a valid residence permit, a re-entry permit or a visa.
4. On arrival: A visa may be issued, if necessary, to travelers staying for no more than 30 days provided they are citizens of Turkey, who, regardless of age, are residing in the European Union, Switzerland, or Gulf Cooperation Council member countries. The residence permit must be valid for at least six months on arrival.
5. On arrival: A visa may be issued free of charge to Malaysian citizens coming for tourism and staying for no more than 15 days.
6. On arrival: A visa may be issued, if necessary, to maids and servants of citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council member countries and Libya provided they are citizens of Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, or Thailand and are in the company of the family.
7. On arrival: A tourist visa is issued free of charge to travelers staying for no more than 15 days so long as they have normal passports and are entering Egypt by way of South Sinai, through Sharm El Sheik, Saint Catherine, or Taba airports, provided they remain in South Sinai resorts and do not proceed with their trip to any other Egyptian city; however this does not apply to:
- Female citizens of the Republic of Moldova, aged between 15 and 35 years old, who must obtain a visa before arrival;
- Citizens of Algeria, Iran, Morocco, or Tunisia.
- Citizens of Lebanon aged between 17 and 49 years old with normal passports.
- Citizens of Belize of Lebanese origin have normal passports and are aged between 17 and 49 years old.
- Citizens of Bosnia Herzegovina of Egyptian origins.
Visa Exemptions based on Egypt visa policy:
All travelers must hold a visa except the following:
1. Citizens of Egypt.
2. Citizens of Kuwait for whom a six-month residence permit will be issued upon arrival.
3. Travelers who stay for no longer than three months, given that they are
- Citizens of Bahrain, Guinea, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, or the Yemen Republic.
- Jordanian people with standard five-year passports, given that the passport does not include a Jordanian Registration Office stamp on the back cover.
- Citizens of Iraq with ‘G’ series or ‘D’ series passports.
- Travelers with passports issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China) and Macao (A Special Administrative Region of China).
- Citizens of Brazil with diplomatic, official, or service passports.
- Citizens of Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bosnia Herzegovina, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, the Republic of Central Africa, Chad, Comoro Islands, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo (Brazzaville).
- Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gabon, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, India, Iraq, Kenya, Indonesia, Lesotho, Libya, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Malawi, Mauritania, Mongolia, Morocco, Mauritius, Mozambique.
- Namibia, Niger, Myanmar, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, Pakistan, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Vietnam, Zambia and Zimbabwe with diplomatic, special or service passports;
- Citizens of Argentina, Belarus, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Republic of Moldova, Russia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Turkey, and Uruguay with diplomatic passports.
- Citizens of Afghanistan aged 50 years old and more or 16 years old and younger.
- Citizens of Lebanon aged 50 years old and more or 16 years old and younger, with normal passports.
- Citizens of Sudan aged 50 years old and more or 16 years old and younger, with normal passports.
- Female Citizens of Sudan with normal passports.
- Travelers aged 14 years old and younger provided they are citizens of Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.
4. Citizens of the People’s Republic of China provided they have:
- Service or special passports and are staying for no more than 30 days.
- Diplomatic passports and are staying for an unlimited period.
5. Travelers with a re-entry permit issued by Egypt.
6. Palestinians with a residence card provided they have stayed outside Egypt for no more than six months.
7. Travelers with a United States ‘re-entry permit’ (Form no. I-327) provided they were born in Egypt.
8. Laissez-Passer travelers issued by the United Nations.
9. Male Palestinians aged less than 18 years old or more than 40 years old provided they:
- have travel documents issued by the Palestinian Authority (green documents).
- Have proof of residence outside Palestine and return tickets to the country of residence.
10. Female Palestinians, regardless of age, provided they:
- have travel documents issued by the Palestinian Authority (green documents)
- have proof of residence outside Palestine and return tickets to country of residence.
11. Spouses and children of Egyptian citizens holding proof of their relationship are citizens of Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, or Thailand.
12. Wives of Egyptian citizens provided they have proof of their marriage.
TWOV (Transit Without Visa)
TWOV is permissible for travelers transiting to a third country within 12 hours, provided the travelers are continuing their trip, holding confirmed tickets, and are not leaving the airport; no hotel accommodation is available at Cairo Airport.
- Citizens of Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon, and the Philippines are not allowed to leave the airport transit area and continue their trip via the same or first connecting plane.
- The government of Egypt denies transit to travelers with Palestinian documents aiming to get across the Rafah Gate.
- Travelers with Palestinian documents are not allowed to leave the airport transit area and continue their trip via the same or first connecting plane.
Additional information
1. In addition to a visa, Iranian citizens must obtain prior permission from Egypt’s Security Authorities.
2. Citizens of Bangladesh, Congo (Kinshasa), Eritrea, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Somalia, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania must have onward or return tickets; travelers will be deported.
3. Citizens of Sudan residing in Sudan, who are not qualified to obtain a visa on arrival, are required to have their visa, which must be issued before arrival and approved by the Egyptian Security Authorities.
4. Male Palestinians aged 18 up to 40, who have green documents issued by the Palestinian authority, need a visa and permission from the Egyptian Security Authorities.
5. In addition to a visa, citizens of Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, especially between 14 and 40, who have normal passports, only require prior permission from the Egyptian Security Authorities.
6. In addition to a visa, Lebanon’s citizens with normal passports only require prior permission from the Egyptian Security Authorities. However, this rule does not apply to:
- Travelers aged 16 years old or younger
- Travelers aged 50 years old or older
- Egyptian citizens with dual nationality.
7. In addition to a visa, citizens of Belize of Lebanese origin, with normal passports only, require prior permission from the Egyptian Security Authorities.
However, this rule does not apply to:
- Travelers aged 16 years old or younger.
- Travelers aged 50 years old or more.
8. In addition to a visa, citizens of Bosnia Herzegovina of Egyptian origin require prior permission from the Egyptian Security Authorities.
9. In addition to a visa, Kazakhstan citizens require prior permission from the Egyptian Security Authorities.
CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE
Import regulations
Travelers, regardless of age, are allowed free import of:
1. A moderate amount of perfume and one liter of Eau de Cologne.
2. 200 grams of tobacco, 25 cigars, or 200 cigarettes.
3. One liter of alcoholic drinks.
4. Non-commercial objects up to a total value of EGP 100.
5. Personal objects, including electric gadgets such as electric shavers or hair dryers.
Prohibited goods include:
- Cotton, narcotics, drugs.
- All kinds of birds, whether live, frozen or stuffed, or any products made from birds.
Export regulations
Travelers are allowed free export of the same articles as shown under ‘free import,’ imported by the traveler.
Prohibited goods include:
- Food and drugs.
- Gold and silver bought on the local market unless in very small quantities and for personal use.
Pets
To bring in cats and dogs, they must be accompanied by a governmental certificate of good health issued by a veterinarian in the home country that is valid for two weeks from the issuing date. However, this certificate does not mean that such pets will be exempted from examination by a veterinary surgeon at the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture on arrival. In case of any suspicion, the animal will be placed in quarantine for no more than 15 days against a charge of EGP 1.50, not including food.
Prohibited:
Pet birds of any kind are not allowed to enter Egypt whether as cargo, cabin luggage, or held luggage except for living young chickens so long as they meet all health requirements set by the General Organization for Veterinary Services and are not imported into any areas infected with bird flu.
Baggage Clearance regulations
A traveler’s luggage should be cleared at the first airport of entry in Egypt.
a. Exemption:
- Luggage of transit travelers whose destination is outside of Egypt provided it is labeled to that destination.
Airport tax
Upon leaving the airport, travelers are not expected to pay any airport fees.
Currency Import regulations
Travelers are allowed to import local currency (Egyptian Pound-EGP) up to EGP 5,000 and foreign currencies up to USD 10,000 or its equivalent in any freely exchanged currency.
Egyptian pounds obtained by way of postal cheques may be used to pay hotel bills and tickets for air travel. Exchange of foreign currency can be made through official banks or money exchange offices.
