Fresh Passport and Passport Renewal Cost for Adult (16 and Older):

Passport fee depends on three major categories: Adult or Minor, applying for a fresh passport or renewing a passport, and optional service to expedite the passport process.

Fresh Passport Cost for Adult:

You will need to pay an application fee and acceptance fee to get your fresh passport.

Passport Renewal Cost for Adult:

If You are 16 or above and applying for US Passport Renewal

Passport Cost for Minor (under 16):

All children under 16 years old must apply in person with two parents or guardians, using Form DS-11. You can’t renew your child’s passport. US Passports issued to children under 16 are only valid for five years.

Expedited Service: Applicants primarily from the US are eligible. This service is also available to eligible US citizens living in Canada who renew their passports by mail using DS-82.

1- or 2-Day Delivery: Only available to applicants for the Passport Book in the US. Passport Card applicants are NOT eligible for this service. Passport cards are mailed using First Class Mail.

File Search: If you meet the following criteria, you may request a File Search instead of submitting proof of US citizenship,

Payment Method:

Applying at Passport Acceptance Facility (Government office, Library, and Post Office):

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, not all the acceptance facilities are working. So, before applying, please check with your acceptance facility (post office, clerk of court, or Library) to see if it is open and accepting applications. Applicants who wish to apply at a post office must schedule an appointment through the USPS site.

Fees for the application and any additional services can be made by:

  • Checks (personal, cashier’s, certified, traveler’s) and money orders made payable to the “US Department of State” are not accepted.
  • Credit and debit cards are not accepted.

Execution or Acceptance Facility Payment:

  • Money orders, payable as directed by the facility, are accepted at all locations.
  • At some locations, personal checks and cash (exact change only) are accepted.
  • Credit cards are accepted at some US postal facilities and other locations. Please keep in mind that the facility may levy a surcharge to cover a credit card transaction cost.

Please check with the acceptance facility ahead of time to confirm acceptable payment methods.

Passport Renewal by Mail:

Payment mode to pay for Renewal by mail and any Additional Services:

  • Personal checks, cashier’s checks, certified checks, and traveler’s checks made payable to the “US Department of State” and money orders made payable to the “US Department of State.”
  • When renewing your passport by mail from Canada, you must pay with a check or money order made payable in US dollars and made payable to a US bank.

Applying for Fresh Passport or Renewing Expired Passport at Passport Agency:

For all fees, the payment mode is,

  • Credit cards (Visa, American Express MasterCard, and Discover) and debit cards with the MasterCard or Visa.
  • Checks (personal, cashiers,certified, travelers) made payable to “US Department of State” Money orders made payable to “US Department of State.”
  • Money (exact amount only- no change will be provided).
  • Prepaid gift or credit card bearing the MasterCard or Visa logo.

Applying from outside the United States:

Overseas applicants should visit the respective US embassy or consulate website to find out what payment methods they accept and how much is a US passport.

Are you renewing your passport from Canada? If yes, you can pay your passport fee by Personal checks or money orders that must be drawn on US financial institutions based in the US and made payable in US dollars. Please do not include 1 or 2 day delivery fees with your payment because State Department cannot return your completed passport to Canada using 1 or 2 day delivery services.

Please keep in mind that State Department does not offer Priority Express Mail to international applicants.
