Nigerian passport holders need a visa to travel to the US. The submission can be done at the USA Department of State Consular Electronic Application Hub. Travelers can apply for their US visa application a maximum of three months before their date of travel.
Types of USA Visa:
The two most general nonimmigrant visas (Visitor Visas) for the United States are:
- Tourism or Medical Treatment (B-2).
- Business (B-1).
- B1 and B2 visa can also be combined and issued as one visa B1/B2.
Validity for Visa:
With the all the above mentioned visa you can stay in the US for up to six months at a time. And the validity of the visas are two years.
Business (B-1) visa:
You may be qualified for a B-1 visa if you will be participating in business activities and movement of a commercial either professional nature in the US, including, but not limited to:
- Consulting with business-related
- Traveling for a scientific, educational, professional, either business convention, either a conference on particular dates
- Settling an estate
- Negotiating a contract
- Participating in short-term training
Transiting through the US: several persons may transit the United States with a B-1 visa
Deadheading: certain aircrew members may enter the United States as deadhead crew with a B-1 visa
Eligibility Criteria:
You should demonstrate the following to be eligible for a B-1 visa:
- The purpose of your journey is to arrive in the United States for a business of a legitimate nature
- You plan to remain for a particular limited period
- You’ve sufficient funds to cover the expenses of the trip and your stay in the United States
- Your Nigeria passport should be valid for at least six months exceeding the date of return.
The waiting period for appointments can be up to two months, while the processing time for the US visa application is generally five to fifteen days. The time can vary depending on the kind of application submitted, whether the application is entire, and the volume of received applications.

At the port of arrival, an immigration official should authorize your admission to the United States and suppose you are qualified for admission. You may be admitted originally for the period you need to carry out your business activities and movements, up to a maximum time of 1 year. Suppose you wish to stay beyond the time indicated on Form I-94 without departing from the United States. In that case, you must file Form I-539, Application to Extend or Change Nonimmigrant Status, and submit any necessary supporting documents to US Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS).
How to Apply for US Visa:
1. Take pictures that should obtain the US visa photo requires before beginning the application process.
2. Complete the DS-160 form online and submit it through the US Department of State website.
3. Pay the non-refundable processing fee either online or over the counter at a bank. If you have account in the GT Bank you can pay the fee online. You can pay the fee using GT Bank’s online pay service. Please refer this page for online related payments.
4. Schedule an appointment online or through the call center. You will require the following documents when making your appointment:
- Your passport number
- your cost payment receipt purchase date
- The 10-digit barcode number or digit from your DS-160 confirmation page
5. Associate your documents, including any supporting documents that may help your application.
6. Attend your USA visa application appointment at the US Embassy in Abuja either US Consulate General in Lagos. You will require bringing the following documents with you to the interview:
- Your current and before passports
- Appointment confirmation letter
- Bar-coded DS-160 confirmation page
- Receipt of the US visa application fee
- A color photograph that meets the photo requites
If your visa is approved, you will deliver your passport with the US Visa to the pick-up location you particularized when you scheduled your appointment, either couriered to your chosen address.
US Visa Application Costs:
The non-refundable USA Visa Application cost for business, tourist and transit visas is about 67200.00 NGN (US$160). It can make payments in cash at a GT Bank branch either online. They are also subject to alteration whenever the embassy deems it fit.
You will require presenting your passport when you make a payment at a GT Bank branch. You must also ensure you get a receipt when making the payment, as you will require providing this when you accompany your interview.
US Visa Requirements:
Travelers will need the following for their USA visa application:
- An original Nigerian passport has two blank pages for visa and arrival stamps and is valid for at least six months beyond your homecoming or return date.
- Previous passports (for journey history)
- Bar-coded DS-160 form confirmation page
- Appointment confirmation page
- Two-color photos that convene the US visa photo requirements
- Application price payment receipt
- Proof of funds (i.e., bank statements for applier, payslips, proof of assets and investments, etc.)
- Supporting documents such as
- Invitation letters
- Letters of employment
- Provisional flight bookings and travel itineraries, etc

Your US visa application can be submitted online via the US Department of State website, but you will need to attend the visa interview with each person at the embassy, either consulate-general.
