Generally, a foreign citizen wishing to enter the United States must first obtain a visa. A non-immigrant visa for temporary residence or an immigrant visa for permanent residence.
Citizens of eligible countries can travel to the US without a visa under the (VWP) Visa Waiver Program. If you don’t qualify for the VWP or travel to participate in the study, work, or exchange program, you must apply for a non-immigrant visa.
Nigerians cannot apply for a US ESTA visa, so you can apply for a (normal visa) immigrant visa or a nonimmigrant visa, and you must attend a US visa appointment.
With increased digital credibility, most applications and documents are submitted online, but the US visa appointment must be attended in person.

Who needs to attend the US Appointment?
The applicant is not required to attend a US visa appointment, and there are certain cases to obtain a US visa appointment waiver. You must meet one of the following requirements to receive this waiver:
- Apply for aG-1, G-2, G-3, G-4, A-1, A-2, C-2, C-3 visa.
- Below 14-years old or over 79-years old.
- You’re applying for a renewal of a B-1/B-2, BCC, C-1/D, F, J, O, or M visa within the same classification.
There are cases where you are eligible for a biometrics collection or a visa interview, but not both. If so, you still need to schedule an appointment that you can’t waive.
Also, there are some visa types that are not eligible for appointment waivers. These applicants want to get E-3, U, T, and L-1 or blanket H -1 visas. Even if they renew their visas, those who fall under those categories will not be allowed to get the visa appointment exemption and must attend the visa interview.
It is not possible for you to obtain an appointment exemption for US immigrant visas, so you will need to discuss it with NVC and obtain permission or confirm the date and time of your appointment.
How do I get a US Appointment waiver?
To apply for a visa appointment waiver, you must choose the option online or call the VAC where you are applying. The VAC will verify if you are eligible for a visa appointment waiver, and they will let you know whether you’ll still need to schedule a visa appointment or not.
How to Schedule US Visa Appointment?
You must fill out a DS-160 form first and plan a US visa interview. Once you have applied for a US visa by submitting the application form and supporting documents, the US Embassy Visa Application Center (VAC) must process it.
This can take anywhere from some days to a few weeks, depending on the US visa type you have applied for and the workload they have. Once they have processed the application, the visa appointment must be made.
The interview should be scheduled for at least one day between fingerprint appointments.

What supporting documents should I bring to the appointment?
When you make an appointment, you must have the following documents in front of you to provide the required information:
- Valid US Passport and Passport number.
- Visa application fee with a receipt number.
- DS- 160 visa application confirmation page.
- Valid E-mail address.
- Documents based on the visa types you are applying for.
Complete the Medical examination for the US visa appointment:
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services want every applicant to complete a medical appointment with a doctor authorized in the country where they will be interviewing.
Authorized Physician means a physician authorized by the US Embassy in your country. If you complete your medical examination with another doctor, the embassy will not accept it.

The medical examination will include your review:
- Medical history,
- Physical examination (includes at least the eyes, ears, nose, joints, and throat, lungs, heart, stomach, lymph nodes, skin, and external genitalia),

When you go to see the physician, you should keep the following documents with you:
- Your visa interview letter,
- Your valid passport,
- Passport size color photographs (varying from 2 to 4 depending on the embassy),
- Copy of your immunization records.
After the Exam:
After the test, the authorized physician will hand the sealed envelope (don’t open it!) to the applicant and submit the results along with other documents on the day of the visa interview, or send the results directly to the US Embassy or Consulate.
Attending the US Visa Appointment:
Before attending the visa appointment, take care to prepare in advance so when you go to the embassy, you don’t feel lost. You will be appointed by a consular officer, as part of which you will scan your fingerprints.
Do not bring any food, laptops, bags, or large bags to the embassy. Take a few things as possible with you. Wear something comfortable but a little more official.
Arrival at the Consulate:
The first thing you need to remember is that you need to be on time for your interview. It is true that you will have to wait in the queue several times to attend the interview so that you can meet the embassy officer an hour or so later. However, if someone tells you that there is a queue at the embassy, do not risk getting there late. Be there at least 10 minutes in advance.
Fingerprint Verification:
At the entrance to the embassy, you will go through a security detection, which in most cases includes a full-body check-up metal detector. After that, you’ll be given a token for your appointment, and then you will have to give your fingerprints. An officer will scan the applicant’s fingerprints and give you further instructions.

You must act in this way; otherwise, your case may be terminated, and the fees already paid will not be refunded.
Can I cancel my Visa appointment?
After applying for a US visa and having difficulty obtaining supporting documents, it is highly unlikely that you will need to cancel an appointment. However, circumstances will change, and you no longer want to get a US visa.
To cancel US visa appointments, you can call the VAC and let them know that you are canceling and that you no longer need a US visa. For U.S. immigrant visas, you must call NVC and inform them that you are not interested in obtaining a US visa.
How to reschedule a US visa appointment?
Once you have arranged your appointment or NVC has arranged it for you, it is recommended that you attend on that day and time. However, if you are unable to attend the US Visa appointment, you can reschedule them.
Rescheduling of Non-Immigrant Visa Appointment:
To reschedule a US non-immigrant visa interview, you can call the VAC or change the date and time online. This will push the appointments to the next available time that will work for you. You must provide the exact reason why you are rescheduling so that the US Embassy can take it into account.
Appointment of US Visa Biometrics:
Biometrics appointments should be scheduled so that applicants can provide their biometric information. This includes US visa photos and fingerprints. Applicants must provide their biometric information to enhance the security of their borders and verify who is entering the country.
Some countries or specific applicants are not required to schedule their fingerprint meeting, but you should check with the US Embassy and ask if you need to complete this part of the visa application process.
How to make a US immigrant visa appointment?
When you apply for a U.S. immigrant visa, scheduling your fingerprint and interview appointments is different. Unlike nonimmigrant visas, the National Visa Center (NVC) is responsible for planning appointments for immigrant visas when you have to plan everything yourself.
After the USA Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) processes an immigrant visa application from a family member or employer, they send the documents to NVC. NVC will provide you with a case identification number and a fee identification number.
Depending on whether the US visa has an annual cap or limit, they schedule interviews.
If there is no limit to the visa you are applying for, they will schedule biometrics and interview appointments immediately. If the visa has a year limit, they will wait until it is your turn, so until you get the current processing date. When it comes to your method of obtaining that visa, they schedule appointments.
You will not have a choice when planning a US visa appointment for immigrant visas. So, NVC will schedule it whenever you have the next timeslot at your US Embassy. This means you need to plan in advance to attend fingerprint and interview meetings and take work hours or your duties.
Rescheduling of Immigrant Visa Appointment:
To reschedule a U.S. immigrant visa interview, you should contact NVC and explain the reasons for wanting to reschedule. You’ll need to provide your case number or application number and let them know at a time convenient to you so they can try to get you that appointment. However, if the time you request is not available, NVC will schedule appointments in the next available timeslot.
Because of this, you should make arrangements and try to attend the original meetings. Rescheduling will delay the processing of your visa and increase the time you have to wait to find out if you have obtained a visa.
It is not recommended to change more than once if an appointment is absolutely necessary. If you re-schedule more than once, you will have to pay a new visa application fee as a penalty.
