IMMIGRATION AND VISAS

Passport Requirements:

All travelers are expected to have a passport, except as follows:

1. People of Vietnam living in the United States of America of their Authorized Immigrant Alien Card (Form I-551) or a U.S. Re-entry Permit (Form I-327) because we have a ‘Visa Waiver Certificate.

N.B.

The ADIT stamps showing the procedures of Type I-551 shall also be approved if a visa exemption card follows it.

2. People of Vietnam living in every country except the United States of America and carrying an Alien Resident Card as long since they have a visa exemption certificate.

3. Passengers with a ‘Laissez-Passer’ given to individuals without nationality or nationality and refugees.

4. Tourists with an identification card issued by Hong Kong (Special Administrative Area of China).

Document Validity

Passports and alternate certificates, or either of them, must be valid for six months from the date of entry.

a. Even then, passports of tourists who have a visa to enter Vietnam must be valid for at least one month after the permit’s expiration date.

b. Passports given to Brunei, Denmark, Finland, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Norway, and Sweden must be valid for three months from the date of entry.

c. People of Vietnam may enter a passport that is valid upon arrival.

d. Visitors of Vietnam can enter a valid travel document upon arrival.

Visa Issuance:

1. Until arrival: Visitors are gladly asked to inform Vietnam’s nearest delegate.

2. Upon arrival: a visa is granted if required for tourists who have a letter from the Vietnamese Immigration Department stating that a visa will be granted upon arrival. Passports must be eligible for one month from the date of the expiry of the visa.

3. Upon arrival: a transit visa is provided for USD 25 if it is required by Vietnam Airlines to obtain a letter from the Vietnamese Immigration Department indicating that a visa would be granted upon entry.

Visa Exemptions

All travelers must hold a visa except the following:

1. Citizens of Vietnam.

2. Citizens of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand staying for no more than 30 days.

3. Tourists with a visa exemption certificate issued to original residents of Vietnam living abroad or residents of Vietnam without even a Vietnamese passport only with an international permanent resident permit.

N.B.

That visa waiver certificate should only be used for admission for a quick visit to Vietnam. It is given in two formats: a self-adhesive certificate for traveling with an international passport and a 16-page booklet for travels with only an international permanent resident permit.

4. Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Republic of Korea, Norway, and Sweden, staying for no more than 15 days.

5. Citizens of Brunei staying for no more than 14 days.

6. Cambodian nationals with ordinary passports remain for no longer than 14 days.

7. Residents of Bulgaria, Cuba, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and Romania offered:

1. Diplomatic or service passports;
2. Ordinary passports and are coming for specific purposes.

N.B.

Travelers must have an invitation written in the language of the inviting body.

8. Individuals of the People’s Republic of China and Mongolia; this also applies if A.C. or A.O. is printed on the passport issued those travelers possess:

1. Regular passports stamped A.B. and are coming for specific purposes;
2. Diplomatic or service passports.

N.B.

(1) Officials holding at least the rank of Deputy Minister or General and passengers through diplomatic passports entering Vietnam without even a visa should remind the Vietnamese consulate or embassy of the intention of their trip.

(2) Travelers must have an invitation written in the language of the inviting body.

9. Citizens of Japan with:

1. Standard passports and staying for no more than 15 days;
2. Diplomatic or service passports and traveling on official business;
3. Diplomatic or service passports provided they are traveling on any other business and are staying for no more than 90 days.

10. Citizens of Laos with:

1. Regular passports and staying for no more than 30 days;
2. Government-duty passports for the duration of the visit.

11. Citizens of the Philippines with:

1. Regular passports and staying for no more than 21 days;
2. Diplomatic or service passports and staying for no more than 30 days.

12. Citizens of Russia with:

1. Standard passports and staying for no more than 15 days;
2. Diplomatic or service passports.

13. Citizens of Brazil and France with diplomatic passports staying for no more than 90 days.

14. Chilean people with diplomatic or government passports.

15. People of Peru with diplomatic or government passports remaining for no longer than 90 days;

16. Travelers with diplomatic or service passports provided they are:

1. Citizens of Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Cambodia, Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Iran, Nicaragua, and Slovak Republic;
2. Citizens of Belarus.

N.B.

Children are excluded from the visa when the names are listed in the parents’ passport or any other person traveling in their business. Children under the age of seven do not require a picture on their parents’ passport or even on the person traveling in their business.

1. Citizens of Argentina, Bangladesh, Mexico, Republic of Montenegro, Morocco, Republic of Serbia, South Africa, Tunisia, and Ukraine, staying for no more than 90 days;
2. residents of Myanmar who remain for no longer than 15 days;

17. Citizens of Turkey with diplomatic, official service, or special passports and staying for no more than 90 days.

18. Travelers with a Vietnamese Permanent Residence Card.

19. Travelers with a Business Travel Card issued by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (ABTC), which is valid for travel to Vietnam along with a passport provided it has the label ‘VNM’ on the back of the card.

TWOV (Transit Without Visa)

TWOV is permissible for travelers continuing their trip on the same day, provided they have confirmed return or onward tickets and do not leave the airport transit area.

N.B.

Certain international flights run by Vietnam Airlines and heading towards final destinations such as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City make a midway stop in Vietnam before arrival at the final destination. It is required to clear customs and change planes. In such cases, travelers should observe that entry rules into Vietnam will apply at the midway stop. However, search the ‘Question of Visa’ section for the likelihood of securing a transit visa upon arrival.

Additional Information

1. Residents of Nigeria with Category ‘D’ visas issued through Vietnam would be refused permission, regardless of the visa’s merits, even though they comply with all of the other access laws.

2. Travelers must have enough money to visit, return or return tickets if they do not need a visa to reach Vietnam and all the paperwork required for their next journey.

CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE

Import regulations

1. Tourists 18 years of age or older are free to import:

1. 250 gram of nicotine, 20 cigarettes or 100 cigars;
2. 1.5 liters of liquor at 22 degrees and above; 2 liters below 22 degrees; 3 liters of other alcoholic beverages;
3. A quantity of not more than 5 kilograms of tea and three kilograms of coffee

2. A moderate volume of perfume and personal belongings;

3. Some products with a net volume of not more than 5 million VND (Vietnamese Dong).

Pets

Both dogs and cats need a fitness certificate and a rabies vaccine certificate.

Baggage Clearance regulations

A Travelers’ baggage should be cleared at Vietnam’s first airport of entry.

Airport tax

All passengers are not allowed to pay any airport tax on departure from the airport.

Currency Import regulations

Local currency (Vietnamese Dong-VND): no limit. Amounts totaling VND 15,000,000-must be reported upon entry.

International currency: no limitations. Amounts above USD 5,000(or equivalent) shall be reported upon entry. Amounts of less than USD 5,000(or equivalent) to be deposited in credit institutions and branches of international banks must also be reported upon entry.

Currency Export regulations

Local currency (Vietnamese Dong-VND): no limit. Amounts totaling VND 15,000,000must be reported upon departure.

International currency: no limitations. Amounts above USD 5,000(or equivalent) shall be declared. Proof of costs is required.

Additional Information on regulations

Vietnam is indeed a participant of the CITES Protocol (the Convention on Free Trade in Endangered Species).

Arms and Ammunition regulations:

The manufacture and sale of weapons and ammunition shall be banned. The passage of weapons, ammunition, explosives, and extremely hazardous goods is subject to prior clearance by the Vietnam government.
