Overview of Visa for Malta

IMMIGRATION AND VISAS

Passport Requirements:-

All travelers except the following require a passport:

1. Travelers with a National ID Card issued to Citizens of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San, Marino, Slovak, Republic Slovenia, Span, Sweden or Switzerland.

2. Travelers with Kinderausweis, a German identity document issued to children aged 15 years old or younger. For children aged more than ten years old, the document must contain a photo of the child.

3. Travelers with a Seaman Book provided they are traveling on duty issued by European Economic Area member countries.

4. Travelers with travel documents issued to refugees or people without nationality or citizenship according to the New York Convention of 1954 or the Geneva Convention of 1951, respectively.

5. Travelers with an «Laissez-Passer» issued by the United Nations provided they are traveling on duty.

6. Travelers with an «Laissez-Passer» issued according to the Dublin Convention of 1990, which is only valid for the transport thereon.

7. Travelers with travel documents given to permanent residents of Kosovo by the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo.

8. Travelers with travel documents and residence permits issued by a European Economic Area member country or by Switzerland issued to approved refugees and people without nationality or citizenship.

Document Validity:-

Passports/travel documents and alternative papers, or either of them, must be valid on arrival.

• Expired passports/travel documents for no more than five years issued to citizens of Austria, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland are accepted.
• Expired passports/travel documents for no more than one year and national ID Cards issued to citizens of Germany are accepted.

Additional information:-

• Students, apart from their nationality/citizenship, residing in a European Union member nations and traveling as part of a school/university group from within the European Union, do not need a passport/travel document on condition that:
• Their names are stated on a List of Travelers stamped by the school/university and certified by the concerned authority in their home country;
• The school/university group is accompanied by one of the teachers at that school/university.
• This List of Travelers must contain a photo of the student.
• Not all European Union member nations issue this kind of List of Travelers. Besides, the exemption will NOT apply to the List of Travelers that is only stamped by the school/university without photos.

Visa Issuance:-

Before arrival: Travelers are kindly requested to contact the nearest embassy or consulates of Malta.

Visa Exemptions:-

All travelers must hold a visa except the following:

1. Citizens/nationals of Malta.

2. Nationals of Austria, Bulgaria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Chez Rep., Estonia, France, Germany, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Hungary, Republic of Ireland, Latvia, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Luxemburg, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, Spain, and Switzerland.

3. Travelers with British passports endorsed British Citizen.

4. Travelers staying for no more than 90 days provided they are: Citizens of Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Brunei, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Nicaragua, Panama, New Zeeland, San Marino, Singapore, St Kitts-Nevis, Seychelles, Uruguay, Vatican City, Paraguay, the United States of America, and Venezuela;

• Travelers with British passports endorsed British National (Overseas).
• Travelers with British passports endorsed.
• ‘British Overseas Territories Citizen’ which includes Great Britain’s ‘right of residence’ label.
• ‘British Subject,’ which also contain the label’ right of residence’ issued by Great Britain
• Citizens of the United Arab Emirates with diplomatic passports and official passports.
• Travelers/visitors with passports issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China) or by Macao (A Special Administrative Region of China).Citizens of the People’s Republic of China with diplomatic passports and service passports.
• Citizens of Turkey with diplomatic passports, special (green cover), or service (grey cover)
• passports;
• Citizens of Libya and Tunisia with diplomatic or special passports;
• Citizens of Albania, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Republic of Moldova., Russia, Serbia, Republic of Montenegro, and Ukraine with diplomatic passports.

5. Travelers/visitors with a ‘Laissez-Passer’ issued by the United Nations or by the European Union provided they are traveling on duty.

6. Travelers/visitors with passports with the label’ Sovereign Military Order of Malta’.

7. Travelers/visitors with a residence or re-entry permit issued to foreign residents by Malta.

8. Travelers/visitors staying for no more than 90 days with a ‘family member’ residence permit issued by Bulgaria, Cyprus, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Switzerland, or Great Britain to a family member who is a citizen of a European Economic Area member country or a citizen of Switzerland provided they are traveling with or traveling to join the citizen of the European Economic Area member country or the citizen of Switzerland.

9. Travelers, regardless of nationality, with a residence permit issued by Monaco or by one of the Schengen states.

10. Travelers/visitors, irrespective of their nationality, residing for a period not exceeding five days in Liechtenstein and holding proof of their residence, provided that they are in transit through the Schengen Area and continue their journey to a country outside the Schengen Area other than by means of transport.

11. Travelers/visitors with travel documents or passport issued to refugees according to the Geneva Convention of 1951 provided they are issued by one of the countries that have signed the Strasburg Agreement of 1959.

12. Travelers/visitors with travel documents and residence permits issued by a European Economic zone member country or by Switzerland to approved refugees and people without nationality or citizenship.

TWOV (Transit without Visa)

1. TWOV is not permissible for refugee’s peoples and people without nationality or citizenship.

2. TWOV is permissible for travelers continuing their trip on the same day to a third country 

Without leaving the airport transit area provided:

• They are arriving from and departing for non-Schengen countries/nations.
• They have confirmed onward tickets (round trip tickets)
• They get all the documents necessary for their next trip.
• No hotel facilities are available inside the airport transit area.
• Citizens of Afghanistan, Congo (Kinshasa), Bangladesh, Eritrea, Ghana, Ethiopia, Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia, or Sri Lanka need a transit visa at all times. Travelers with normal passports/travel documents may use the above-mentioned TWOV facility if they have a residence permit for Bulgaria, Cyprus, Andorra, Republic of Ireland, San Marino, Romania, or Great Britain.

Additional information:-

1. Travelers/visitors must have enough money for their stay, return or onward tickets, and all necessary documents for their next trip.

• Exemptions: Citizens of European Economic Zone member countries and Switzerland.

2. Extension of the visit is possible for visa-exempted travelers through reporting to the police headquarters in Malta no later than one week before the visa Exemption expires.

3. Students, apart from their nationality/citizenship, residing in a European Union member nation and traveling as part of a school/university group from within the European Union member nation, do not need a visa on condition that:

• Their names are stated on a ‘List of Travelers’ stamped by the school/university and certified by the concerned authority in their home country;
• The school group is accompanied by one of the teachers at that school/university;
• When the ‘List of Travelers’ is only stamped by the school/university and is neither authenticated by the concerned authority nor containing photos of the students, each student must carry his/her own travel document/passport and proof of place of residence.

Information to know:-

Visitors who do not comply with entry or transit regulations will be refused entry upon arrival.

And a fine of up to EUR 11,646.87 will have to be charged by the airline.

CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE

Import Regulations:

1. Travelers/Visitors arriving with goods bought within the European Union for personal use only are allowed free import of:

• Tobacco products: 800 cigarettes; 400 cigarillos, each weighing no more than three grams 200 cigars; one kilogram of smoking tobacco;
• Alcoholic beverages: 10 liters of alcoholic drinks over 22%; 20 liters of alcoholic drinks less than 22%; 90 liters of wine but no more than 60 liters of sparkling wine; 110 liters of beer.

2. Travelers/Visitors arriving from non-European Union nations, including the Canary Islands, Channel Islands, and other similar regions, are allowed free import of:

• Travelers/Visitors aged 18 years old and more are allowed 200 cigarettes; 100 cigarillos each weighing no more than three grams; 50 cigars; 250 grams of smoking tobacco;
• Travelers/Visitors aged 18 years old and more are allowed one liter of alcoholic drinks and one liter of still wine;
• Other articles up to a total value of EUR 175.

3. Prohibited Goods Products:

Animal products not originating in the Member States of the European Union, Andorra, Norway, San Marino, Liechtenstein or Switzerland cannot be imported into the Member States of the European Union, with the exception of small quantities of products originating in Andorra, Croatia, the Faeroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and small quantities of specific products originating in other countries. 

Export regulations:-

Travelers/Visitors are allowed to free export of moderate amounts of perfume, tobacco products, and alcoholic drinks.

Pets must be accompanied by:

• An import license from the Director of Veterinary Service
• A medical certificate from the Veterinary Service of the home country pursuant to the conditions of importation. Mammals and birds must be accompanied by an import license from the Director of Veterinary Service, along with an official medical certificate from the Veterinary Service of the home country. The Pet Travel Scheme allows carnivorous pets such as cats, dogs, and ferrets, coming from certain nations as well as residents of Malta that travel to any of those countries to re-enter Malta without quarantine on condition that they meet all the conditions. Please check the website (www.veterinary.gov.mt) for an up-to-date list of those countries. Please note that this does not apply to other pets.

To be included in the Scheme, the pet must be:

• Supplied with a microchip
• Vaccinated against rabies
• Blood-tested, and the result of the test must indicate that the animal is properly protected against rabies. Pets cannot enter Malta until at least six months pass after the date of the successful blood test
• Issued a pet passport by the concerned veterinary authority of the home country
• Treated with Praziquantel for tapeworm and with Fiprinol for ticks 24-28 hours before starting the trip to Malta.

Baggage Clearance regulations:-

The luggage of a traveler should be cleared at the first airport of entry in Malta.

Exemptions:-

Luggage of transit travelers whose destination is outside Malta provided the onward flight will take place within 24 hours. Otherwise, luggage has to be labeled or tagged to Malta and is cleared at the first airport of entry in Malta.

Airport tax:-

Travelers/visitors are not required to pay any airport tax upon their departure from the airport.

Currency Import regulations:-

For currency imports, the same rules apply as for currency exports.

Currency Export regulations:-

There are no restrictions on exporting local currency (Euro – EUR) and foreign currencies for travelers arriving from or traveling to a country within the European Union Nations. As far as travellers coming directly from or commuting to a country outside the European Union are concerned, amounts greater than EUR 10 000 or their equivalent in another currency, including draughts of bankers and cheques of any sort, must be declared.

Arms and Ammunition regulations:-

Firearms, ammunition, and explosives are prohibited.
