IMMIGRATION AND VISAS
Passport Requirements:
All travelers require a passport, except for:
1. Travelers released by the United Nations or European Commission with a ‘Laissez-Passer.’
2. Travelers with the following documents issued to Guatemalan citizens provided that they are valid at the time of arrival:
2.1. A birth certificate that would have been better accompanied by a photo ID to prevent further checks on arrival;
2.2. A domestic identification card.
3. Guatemalan people living in the United States are also authorized to enter Guatemala with their permanent resident or alien resident card (Form No I-551).
4. Ethnic Identification Cards provided by travelers to residents of El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. However, they are only approved when they fly between El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua accompanied by a completed CA-4 type or a ‘Tarjeta de Ingreso y Regreso (TIE).’
5. Guatemala approves travelers with identity documents issued to refugees and persons without nationality or citizenship, provided that these documents have been issued at the time of issuance of the visa.
6. Travellers with a valid United States Refugee Travel Document (Form no I-571).
Document Validity based on Guatemala visa policy:
For the duration of the intended visit, the passport or alternative documentation must be valid.
a. Expired passports issued to citizens of Guatemala are accepted. However, a valid new blue cover passport is a must when they leave Guatemala.
b. Residents of Guatemala can enter with travel documents that are valid on arrival.
Additional information:
Admission and transit are denied to deported travelers of non-Guatemalan nationality.
Visa Issuance based on Guatemala visa policy:
Before arrival: Travellers are kindly requested to contact the nearest representation of Guatemala.
Visa Exemptions based on Guatemala visa policy:
A visa must be carried by all travelers except for the following:
1. Citizens of Guatemala.
2. Travellers staying for no more than 90 days so long as they are:
2.1. Citizens of Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Estonia, Finland, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, India, Antigua & Barbuda, Israel, Australia, Italy, Bahamas, Japan, Barbados.
Republic of Korea, Belize, Kuwait, Brunei, Latvia, Canada, Liechtenstein, Costa Rica, Lithuania, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Denmark, Madagascar, El Salvador, Malaysia, Fiji, Malta, France, Marshall Islands, Germany, Mexico, Honduras, Monaco, Iceland, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Turkey, Switzerland.

2.2. Travellers with British passports with the exception of those endorsed ‘British National (Overseas).’
2.3. Travellers with Chinese Taipei passports;
2.4. Travellers with diplomatic, official, and service passports provided they are citizens of Belarus, Colombia, Dominica, Egypt, Guyana, Jamaica, Bolivia, Jordan, Cuba, Kenya, Ecuador, Montenegro, Grenada, Morocco, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Haiti, Philippines, Republic of Serbia, Suriname or Thailand.
3. Travellers with a re-entry permit issued by Guatemala provided the permit is included in an exit permit with the words ‘Válido para re-ingresaral paÃs’ (Valid for re-entry into the country).
4. Travellers staying for no more than 90 days provided they have a permanent residence permit issued by Honduras, El Salvador, or Nicaragua.
5. Travellers staying for no more than 90 days provided they have a permanent residence permit issued by Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Estonia, Finland, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, India, Antigua & Barbuda, Israel, Australia.
Italy, Bahamas, Japan, Barbados, Republic of Korea, Belize, Kuwait, Brunei, Latvia, Canada, Liechtenstein, Costa Rica, Lithuania, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Denmark, Madagascar, El Salvador, Malaysia, Fiji, Malta, France, Marshall Islands, Germany, Mexico, Honduras, Monaco, Iceland, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Portugal, Romania.
San Marino, Turkey, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Uruguay, Chinese Taipei, Slovak Republic, Ukraine, Panama, Slovenia, Poland, Solomon Islands, Qatar, South Africa, Vanuatu, Russia, Spain, Sao Tome & Principe, St. Kitts-Nevis, Singapore, St. Lucia, Vatican City, Sweden, Trinidad & Tobago, Tuvalu, United States of America, United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.
However, such rules do not apply to:
5.1. Citizens of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Congo (Brazzaville), Albania, Angola, Algeria, Armenia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Botswana, Congo (Kinshasa), Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Timor Leste, Vietnam and Yemen Rep;
5.2. Citizens of Cameroon, Cuba, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Jordan, and Pakistan with normal passports;
5.3. Travellers with Palestinian passports.
5.4. Citizens of the People’s Republic of China, including those with passports issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China) and by Macao (A Special Administrative Region of China).
6. Travellers with a United States Refugee Travel Document (Form no. I-571) provided they also have a Permanent Resident or Resident Alien Card (Form no I-551).
7. Travellers with a ‘Laissez Passer’ issued by either the European Commission or the United Nations.
8. Travelers with a valid visa to Canada, the United States of America, or a Member State of the Schengen Agreement.
Such rules are not, however, applicable to:
8.1. Citizens of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Albania, Congo (Brazzaville), Eritrea, Angola, Ghana, Laos, Algeria, Liberia, Armenia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Botswana, Congo (Kinshasa), Cuba, Ethiopia, Haiti, Iran, Sudan, Iraq, Timor Leste, Jordan, Mongolia, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Vietnam, and Yemen Republic;
8.2. Citizens of Cameroon, Cuba, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, Jordan, Pakistan with normal passports;
8.3. Citizens of the People’s Republic of China, including those with passports issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China) and by Macao (A Special Administrative Region of China).
8.4. Travellers with Palestinian passports.
TWOV (Transit Without Visa):
TWOV is permissible for travelers continuing their trip to a third country by the same or first connecting plane within 8 hours so long as they have tickets with confirmed reservations. Leaving the airport transit area is prohibited.
Additional information:
1. An authorized visa for entry into Guatemala is required for citizens of Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Algeria, Armenia, Bangladesh, Bosnia Herzegovina, Botswana, Cameroon, People’s Republic of China, Congo (Brazzaville), Congo (Kinshasa), Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Jordan.
Kenya, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Laos Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Mali, Mongolia, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Timor Leste, Vietnam and Yemen Republic. (*)
2. An authorized visa for entry into Guatemala is required for travelers with passports issued by Hong Kong (A Special Administrative Region of China) and passports issued by Macao (A Special Administrative Region of China). (*)
3. Travellers with British passports not endorsed ‘British Citizen’ must have an authorized visa. (*)
4. An authorized visa for entry into Guatemala is required for citizens of Cameroon, Cuba, Haiti, Indonesia, Kenya, and Pakistan with normal passports. (*)
5. Travellers may be asked to show proof of an onward or return ticket.
6. The consul issuing the visa will inform travelers, if necessary, of the sums that must be paid as a deposit at the port of entry in Guatemala; such amounts will be returned to the travelers if they leave Guatemala within one year.
7. Visa Exemption is granted to travelers staying for no more than 90 days. However, it is possible to extend the visit for another 90 days at the Immigration Office.
8. An authorized visa for entry into Guatemala is needed for travelers with travel documents issued by the Palestinian government. (*)

Hungary, Iceland, St. Kitts-Nevis, India, Republic of Ireland, Israel, Sweden, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Kuwait, Latvia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Liechtenstein, Trinidad & Tobago, Lithuania, Tuvalu, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Switzerland, Malaysia, Malta, United States of America, Marshall Islands, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua.
United Arab Emirates, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, Vatican City, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Argentina, San Marino, Austria, Sao Tome & Principe, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, El Salvador, Slovak Republic, Fiji, Slovenia, France, Solomon Islands, Germany, South Africa, St. Lucia, Turkey, Uruguay, Ukraine, Vanuatu, and Venezuela, who have proof of their residence only require a visa issued by a Guatemalan embassy.
Warnings:
Travelers who do not respect entry or transit regulations will be deported at the expense of the transporting carrier, and the transporting carrier will have to pay a fine of USD 1,000 per each traveler.
CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE
Import regulations:
Travelers over the age of 18 years are permitted to import:
– 31⁄2 ounces or 80 cigarettes of tobacco;
– 1 1⁄2 liters or two alcoholic beverage bottles.
– No limits on perfume are in place.
Pets:
A government licensed veterinarian health certificate must accompany cats and dogs. Pets imported from the USA must have this certificate issued by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA -APHIS).
Pets which must be older than four months of age and must have a vaccination certificate showing the following vaccinations:
-Dogs: Distemper, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Rabies, and Hepatitis.
-Cats: Distemper, Panleukopenia, Feline Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus, Rabies, and Feline Leukemia.
Baggage Clearance regulations:
– A traveler’s luggage should be cleared at the airport of final destination in Guatemala so long as it is labeled as required.
– In case of transit-only: A traveler’s luggage should be cleared at the airport of final destination, namely an international airport, provided the onward flight is on the same day.
* Exemptions:
Luggage of transit travelers whose destination is outside Guatemala provided the luggage is labeled to that destination, and the onward flight is on the same day.
Airport tax:
All travelers are required to pay an Airport Security Tax of GTQ 20 or USD 3.
* Exemptions:
1. Travellers with a United Nations ‘Laissez-Passer’;
2. Transiting travelers;
3. Travellers with diplomatic and official passports.
Currency Import regulations:
There are no restrictions on importing foreign currencies, but the import of local currency (Guatemala Quetzal-GTQ) is prohibited.
Currency Export regulations:
– Citizens of Guatemala and residents are allowed to export foreign currencies up to the equivalent of GTQ 2500. However, the export of local currency (Guatemala Quetzal- GTQ) is prohibited.
– Other travelers are allowed to export foreign currencies without any restrictions, but the export of local currency (Guatemala Quetzal-GTQ) is prohibited.
Re-exchange of GTQ into foreign currency is allowed up to the equivalent of USD 100.
