What is the Djibouti visa policy?

The Djibouti visa policy shows who may enter the Eastern African nation without a visa and which foreign nationals require a visa for Djibouti.

The Djibouti visa policy is May change based on the citizenship of the applicant. The Djibouti government recently updated the policy to increase the number of travelers from other nationals.

Travelers from some countries will not become under the new updated Djibouti visa policy mentioned below.

Passport Requirements

All travelers need a passport, with the exception of the following:

1. Travelers with a ‘Laissez Passer’ issued by the concerned authorities in Djibouti to Citizens of Djibouti.
2. Travelers with a Seaman Book as long as they are traveling on duty.
3. Travelers with travel documents known as ‘Titre de Voyage’ issued to refugees and people without nationality or citizenship according to the conventions of the United Nations.

Document Validity

Passports and alternative documents, or all of them, should be valid upon arrival.

Visa Issuance

• Before arrival: Travelers are kindly requested to contact the nearest representation of Djibouti.

• On arrival: A short-stay visa for a maximum stay of one month may be issued if necessary, against a fee of DJF 10,000 provided:

– Travelers have a return or onward ticket.

– Travelers have entry documents for their next trip; and

– Travelers have enough money to cover the expenses of their stay; or

– Travelers have a voucher if they are tourists traveling on an organized tour.

• On arrival: A transit visa may be issued if necessary, against a fee of DJF 5,000 provided travelers are staying for no more than three days and that they have onward tickets, entry documents for their next trip, and enough money to cover the expenses of their stay.

Visa Exemptions

All travelers must hold a visa except the following:

1. Citizens of Djibouti.
2. Travelers with a residence or return permit issued by Djibouti to foreign residents.

TWOV (Transit Without Visa)

1. TWOV no serA¡ vA¡lido para refugiados o personas sin nacionalidad o ciudadanía.
2. No se aplica TWOV a los viajeros que continúen su viaje en el mismo o el primer vuelo de conexión, siempre que no dejen el aeropuerto.

Warnings

If travelers do not respect entry regulations, the transporting carrier will have to pay a fine of DJF 1,000,000.

CUSTOMS AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE

Import regulations

• Travelers arriving with goods bought within the European Union, including the French Overseas Departments of Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, and Reunion, for personal use, only are allowed free import of:

a. Travelers aged 17 years old and more are allowed 800 cigarettes; 400 cigarillos; 200 cigars; one kilogram of pipe or cigarette tobacco.

b. 10 liters of alcoholic drinks over 22%; 20 liters of alcoholic drinks less than 22%; 90 liters of wine but no more than 60 liters of sparkling wine; 110 liters of beer.

• Travelers arriving from non-European Union countries, including the Canary Islands and the Channel Islands, are allowed free import of:

a. Travelers aged 17 years old and more are allowed 200 cigarettes; 100 cigarillos each weighing no more than three grams; 50 cigars; 250 grams of smoking tobacco; or a proportional mixture of these products.

b. Travelers aged 17 years old and more are allowed one liter of alcoholic drinks over 22% volume; two liters of dessert wine not less than 22% and sparkling wines; two liters of table wine.

c. The following goods are allowed except if they are listed under ‘Customs Rules Prohibited’:

– Fish up to two kilograms.

– Caviar up to 250 grams.

– Other animal products: up to one kilogram.

d. Sufficient medical products for personal use only.

e. Air travelers are allowed other goods up to a total value of EUR 430 per adult individual or EUR 90 per traveler aged less than 15 years

Warning:

Such amounts cannot be accumulated by different people.

Gold, Jewelry, Etc.:

Import of gold: Gold must be declared with the exception of personal jewelry weighing not more than 500 grams and used for normal purposes.

• Prohibited Goods:

Animal products not originating in a Member State of the European Union, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino or Switzerland can not be imported into a Member State of the European Union, with the exception of small quantities of products originating in Andorra, Croatia, the Faeroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and small quantities of specific products originating in other countries.

Pets

Cats and dogs aged more than six months old require a certificate of vaccination against rabies issued less than one year and more than one month before departure. Such a certificate is not required for animals aged less than six months old as they will be vaccinated in the country when they become six months old.

Baggage Clearance regulations

A traveler’s luggage should be cleared at Ambouli, the only international airport in Djibouti.

Exemption:

Luggage of transit travelers whose destination is outside Djibouti, provided the next flight is on the same day.

Airport tax

For passengers leaving Djibouti, airport tax is imposed on:

1. Djibouti-bordering countries: DJF 5,000. -;
2. Other African and Middle East countries: Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates: DJF 12,000. -;
3. Rest of the countries: DJF 15,000.-.

Place of payment: airport of departure.

Currency Import regulations

Local currency (Djibouti Franc-DJF) and foreign currencies: up to or equal to USD 5,000. – at most.

Currency Export regulations

Local currency (Djibouti Franc-DJF) and foreign currencies: up to or equal to USD 5,000. – at most.

Wild Fauna and Flora:

It is forbidden or limited under CITES to import some endangered plant species, live animals, and their products.

Firearms must be declared upon entry and exit, respectively.

Crew members customs regulations:

For the crew, there are no duty-free import allowances.
