IMMIGRATION AND VISAS

Passport Requirements

All travelers need a passport, with the exception of the following:

• The national identity cards of the people of Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Document Validity:

• Passports and alternative papers, or either of them, must be valid for a period of at least six months.
• With passports that must be valid upon arrival, Omani people may enter.
• With a passport and visa, which must be valid upon arrival, residents of Oman can enter.
• Citizens of Thailand must have passports that are valid for at least one month.

Issuance of Visa:

1. Until arrival: Visitors are kindly requested to contact the nearest Oman department.
2. On arrival: visa given to citizens of the Republic of Korea and Brunei if necessary:

A single ‘visit visa’ entry may be issued to travelers who stay no longer than one month (free of charge).

• For a fee of OMR 10 per person, a multiple entry ‘Business Visa’ may be issued; stay is permitted up to no more than three weeks per visit, and potential validity is up to no more than one year; validity extension is not possible. For each day, travelers overstaying their visas would be forced to pay a fine of OMR 10. In Oman, travelers must provide proof of business goals.
• On arrival: if required for New Zealand citizens:
• A single ‘visit visa’ may be issued to travelers staying for a period not exceeding three months (free of charge).
• For a fee of OMR 10 per person, a multiple entry ‘Business Visa’ may be issued; stay is permitted up to no more than three weeks per visit, and potential validity is up to no more than one year; validity extension is not possible, For each day, travelers overstaying their visas will be required to pay a fine of OMR 10. In Oman, travelers must have evidence of business objectives.
• On arrival: if requested, a single ‘Visit Visa’ can be issued for a fee of OMR 6 per person (Extension of validity for one month is possible) or a multiple ‘Business Visa’ can be issued for a fee of up to 3 weeks per visit, and the possible validity is up to a maximum of one year; extension of validity is not possible and the fee is OMR 10 per person. Travelers in Oman must have evidence of business objectives. For each day, travelers overstaying their visa will be forced to pay an OMR 10 fine as follows:
• Hong Kong Passport Travelers (A Special Administrative Area of China).
• Travelers with passports from Chinese Taipei

Citizens of Argentina, Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, France, Macedonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lebanon, Japan, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Moldova, Malaysia, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Suriname, Tunisia, Turkey, Thailand, USA, Uruguay, Holy See, and Venezuela;
• Travelers, regardless of endorsement, with British passports.

5. On arrival: if required, transit through Oman may be permitted at the airline’s request, allowing the holder to stay for a maximum of 72 hours only if the return ticket is held by the traveler. A 72-hour visa may be issued for OMR 50 per user, but a 24-hour transfer visa may be issued free of charge.

The exemptions: Children aged 17 years or below.

6. On arrival: if necessary, a visa will be given to domestic servants or drivers of citizens of the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, provided they are accompanied by a member of the patron’s family who must be a citizen of a member state of the Gulf Cooperation Council. It should not be less than six months for a resident visa. The validity of the visa is one month; it may be extended for a period of 1 month. It is free of charge for officials of the States of the Gulf Cooperation Council, except for officials of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait who are expected to pay OMR 5 per citizen. For each day, travelers overstaying their visas would be forced to pay a fine of OMR 10.

7. On arrival: if required, a ‘Gulf Cooperation Council Resident Visa’ is issued to residents of the Member States of the Gulf Cooperation Council for a fee of OMR 3 and must be valid for 28 days; its validity can be extended for a period of 7 days. Travelers must come directly from a state in the Gulf Cooperation Council. For non-degree related occupations, such as carpenters and workers, limitations apply. If in question, travelers are expected to contact the transport carrier’s station manager. The resident visa should not be valid for less than six months.

• The Exemptions: Travelers aged 17 years or less. Visa-exceeding travelers will be required to pay a fine of OMR 10 for each day.

Exemptions from Visa:

A visa must be carried by all travelers except for the following:

1. Citizens of Omani.

2. Travelers are coming directly from the Emirates of Dubai with a Dubai visa or a stamp of the entry (the validity of the Dubai visa should not be less than 21 days).

• Citizens of Argentina, Australia, Austria, Andorra, Bolivia, Brazil, Brunei, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Czech, Denmark, Ecuador, Cyprus, Estonia, France, Macedonia, Germany, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Hungary, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malaysia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Suriname, Thailand, Turkey, USA, Uruguay, Tunisia, Holy See, and Venezuela;
• Travelers with passports issued by Hong Kong (Chinese Special Administrative Region).
• Travelers with passports from Chinese Taipei.
• Travelers with British passports, irrespective of passport acceptance relating to their citizenship.

3. Citizens of Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, given that the validity of a passport is not surpassed by their stay.

4. Travelers coming directly from Qatar with a Qatar visa or with an entry stamp (the validity of the Qatar visa should not be less than 21 days) are subject to the following exemptions:

• Travelers with British passports regardless of endorsement in passport concerning their citizenship.
• Travelers with passports issued by Hong Kong (Chinese Special Administrative Region).
• Citizens of Argentina, Australia, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Croatia, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, Macedonia, Germany, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Republic of Moldova, Monaco, Netherlands, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Suriname, Sweden, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, USA, Uruguay, Holy See, and Venezuela;
• Travelers with passports from Chinese Taipei.

(Transit without Visa) TWOV:

TWOV refers to those travelers who continue their journey within 6 hours to a third country only if they have tickets and the required documentation without leaving the transit lounge for their onward journey.

Additional Information:

1. A residence visa, instead of a residence permit, is issued to foreign residents of Oman.
2. For their next trip and return or onward tickets, travelers must have the documents necessary.
3. Resident expatriate employees’ visas will automatically be revoked if they fly from Oman for a stay of more than 180 days from the date of departure.

Information to know:

Travelers who do not comply with the entry rules will be recalled at the expense of the same carrier to their home country. Carriers may be subject to fines of up to OMR 200 or USD 520 if they bring in missing or incorrect documents from travelers.

Customs and Foreign Exchange:

Import regulations:

There are no limits on importing:

a. Videotapes: 8 tapes are permitted for personal use only; Customs officials may, however, confiscate tapes. Tapes will be sent for verification to the Ministry of Citizens’ Heritage and Culture, which takes about a week.

b. Two bottles or two liters of alcoholic drinks per family if imported by a non-Muslim, bringing in more than 2 liters results in a fine of OMR 5 and confiscation of the whole quantity. A fine of OMR 5 and complete quantity confiscation.

c. For the import of livestock and meat products, the same laws apply as for the import of pet animals. In addition, it requires a certificate of Islamic slaughter.

Prohibited products:

1. Books that is indecent

2. Non-canned food (non-alcoholic beverages, vegetables, fruit) that is purchased from cholera-infected countries (only if the traveler holds a clearance from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries).

3. Firearms and swords, toy guns or knives, and flammable materials such as gases (only if the traveler holds a clearance permit from the Ministry of Security). Valuable items may be exempted on condition that they are evaluated by security officers.

4. Bees (unless the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has clearance).

5. Dates: all types of dates, including ornamental palm trees, date palm shoots, coconuts, and all parts thereof.

Customs regulations on crew members:

For crew members, the same rules apply as for regular travelers.

Pets:

Pet animals are required to be accompanied by:

• A rabies vaccination certificate stating that it is over one month old but less than six months old; and
• A license from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for imports; and
• A certificate of public health is issued in the home country, which must be valid during the period of importation.
• The import of birds (parrots) requires the ratification of an environmental export certificate issued by the national authorities. Pet animals may enter as cargo, as checked luggage, or in the cabin. All of this is, however, subject to individual airline procedures (Please check with the carrier).

Period of Quarantine:

1. For six months, dogs and cats arriving from countries infected with rabies will be isolated. Apply to the Seeb International Airport (Muscat) quarantine veterinarian in case of doubt concerning rabies-infected countries.

2. Any imported living birds or animals which do not comply with the conditions referred to above are subject to isolation or any other appropriate action.

Regulations on Baggage Clearance:

The luggage of a traveler should be cleared at the first airport of entry in Oman.

The exemptions: Passengers’ luggage in the transit area to a destination outside Oman.

Tax on Airports:

All travelers are expected to pay the OMR 5 airport tax upon departure from the airport unless it is obtained at the time of issuance of the fare.

The exemptions: Children under the age of two years old.

Regulations on Currency Imports:

Importing local currency (Rial Omani-OMR) and foreign currencies are not restricted. Israel’s currency is forbidden.
